Understanding Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities. It provides essential coverage for medical expenses, but it's critical to know what Medicare does and doesn't cover.

What Medicare Covers

Medicare consists of several parts, each covering different aspects of healthcare:

Part A (Hospital Insurance): This covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

Part B (Medical Insurance): Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment.

Part C (Medicare Advantage): Private insurance plans approved by Medicare that covers Part A and Part B and some plans include prescription coverage.

Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): This provides prescription drug coverage, which can be added to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

What Medicare Doesn't Cover

Medicare has limitations, and there are gaps in coverage. It typically does not cover:

  • Long-term care (like nursing home care)
  • Dental care
  • Vision care
  • Hearing aids
Non-emergency medical care outside the United States

How to Get More Coverage if You’re on Medicare

  • Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) offer comprehensive coverage with additional benefits but come with network restrictions and may have lower monthly premiums.
  • Medicare Advantage Plan with Part D includes prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap) plans, on the other hand, provide more flexibility and predictability in healthcare costs, but they do not include additional benefits and have higher monthly premiums. Plans cover expenses such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Unlike Part C plans, Medigap plans don't include prescription drug coverage or additional benefits like dental or vision.

When you’re getting started with Medicare coverage, you can add additional coverages with Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) or Medicare Supplements, but you don’t need and cannot have both. Medicare Advantage plans need to be renewed at the conclusion of each year, meaning plans can be changed as needed. In contrast, a Medicare Supplement plan offers the assurance of lifelong coverage that cannot be terminated as long as you continue to pay your premiums.

Advantage Plans

Private insurance companies offer Medicare Advantage plans that provide all of your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. These plans often include additional benefits like vision, hearing, dental, and wellness programs.

The Benefits of Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as Part C, offer enhanced Medicare benefits that can often be more affordable than a piecemeal approach with original Medicare and Medigap plans. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Here are some key benefits:

Comprehensive Coverage: Medicare Advantage Plans include Medicare Part A and Part B coverages and often include coverage for prescription drugs (Part D), as well as dental, vision, and hearing services.

Cost Savings: These plans can provide cost savings compared to Original Medicare, often with lower out-of-pocket expenses and fixed monthly premiums.

Convenience: Many Medicare Advantage Plans offer integrated healthcare services, like wellness programs and telehealth options, for your convenience.

Additional Benefits: All plans offer added benefits like gym memberships and most offer transportation services to medical appointments.

Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement plans help cover some out-of-pocket costs Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Private insurance companies also offer these plans, and they are designed to work with your Medicare coverage.

The Benefits of Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement Plans, also known as Medigap, work alongside Original Medicare to help cover the expenses that Medicare doesn't pay for. Candidates must have Medicare Part A & B to qualify.

Here's why they can be a valuable addition:

No Network Restrictions: You can visit any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare, as there are no network restrictions.

Predictable Costs: Medicare Supplement plans help you budget with predictable monthly premiums and minimal out-of-pocket costs when you receive healthcare services.

Comprehensive Coverage: Depending on the plan you choose, Medigap can cover deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, ensuring you're not burdened with unexpected medical bills.

Travel Benefits: Some supplement plans offer coverage for emergency medical care while traveling abroad.
